ABOUT DR. JOYCE BRUHN DE GARAVITO
Dr. Joyce Bruhn de Garavito, Western University Professor Emerita, “officially” retired from the University of Western Ontario in 2020, following a 20-year tenure in the Department of Languages and Cultures, former Department of Modern Languages and Literatures. Joyce holds degrees in Linguistics (University of McGill, PhD.), Applied Linguistics (Concordia, MA), and Philosophy (Universidad Nacional de Colombia, BA). She held positions as a lecturer at Dawson College, Concordia University, and McGill University before her appointment at Western. During her tenure at Western, Joyce has served as the Chair of the Graduate program in Hispanic Studies (2006-2009) and the Chair of the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures (2011-2015). In addition to teaching a wide variety of courses, Joyce has supervised more than 30 MA and PhD theses at Western.
Joyce’s immense contributions to the field of linguistics have been focused primarily in the areas of morphosyntax, acquisition of morphosyntax, bilingualism, language contact, linguistic theory applied to language teaching, language contact and indigenous languages, and ellipsis. She has been the recipient of a number of grants and awards including the Graham and Gail Wright Distinguished Scholar award, the Edward G. Pleva award, and received grants from SSHRC, AHSS-International, and Research Western. Joyce has published numerous articles in journals such as International Journal of Bilingualism, Bilingualism: Language and Cognition, Journal of Linguistics, and Language Learning. Her most recent work, an introductory linguistic textbook co-edited with John W. Schwieter, entitled Introducing Linguistics: Theoretical and Applied Approaches, was published in January 2021.
Joyce was fundamental in co-founding QODAS, which had its first meeting at The University of Western Ontario in 2005. As we celebrate the 16th annual QODAS back at Western, it serves as a testament to Joyce’s legacy in the field of research as well as her commitment to the supervision and teaching of the next generation of young linguists.
